boy. that was a long 3 weeks.
must get back into the groove: been to newcastle for respects, work work work, popped to spain to see me mam. work work work.
now just reaquainting with squidoo and the like. too much time spent creating (yawn) templates and suchlike. (although following football teams in each of the different leagues has been a fun challenge!)

Sir Bobby Robson CBE, 1933-2009.

Sir Bobby Robson, the Former England, Newcastle and Ipswich manager, passed away this morning at 6.30am, following a long battle with cancer.

The football legend, whose Bobby Robson Foundation held an invitational fundraising game at St. James' Park, Newcastle, last Sunday, passed away surrounded by his family at home.

His professional playing career as an inside-forward spanned nearly 20 years, during which he played for just three clubs – Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and briefly for the defunct Vancouver Royals. He also made 20 appearances for England, scoring four goals.

Sir Bobby was the England manager from 1982 to 1990, after 13 years in charge as a successful manager at Ipswich Town.

As a manager, Sir Bobby Robson won the league championships in the Netherlands and Portugal, won trophies in England and Spain, and famously took the England National Team to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990.

Robson was knighted in 2002, and was made honorary president of Ipswich Town.

On 9 December 2007, Sir Bobby was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year show in recognition of "his contribution as both player and manager in a career spanning more than half a century".
On 5 May 2008, during the 30th anniversary celebrations of Ipswich Town's 1978 FA Cup win, Robson was granted the Freedom of Ipswich.
And on 8 December 2008, he earned another such accolade when he was given the Freedom of the City of Durham.

In March 2009, UEFA awarded Robson the Emerald UEFA Order of Merit award, awarded to "individuals who have dedicated their talents to the good of the game". The award was presented to Sir Bobby at St James' Park on 26 July 2009, prior to the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy match.

Since 1991, Sir Bobby has battled recurring problems with cancer, and in August 2008 he spoke of his latest bout against lung cancer:
"My condition is described as static and has not altered since my last bout of chemotherapy...I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute."

Derek Llambias, Newcastle Managing Director, has stated that St. James' Park Football Stadium, Newcastle, will be open from today and all through the week-end, for fans to pay their respects to the great man.

I met Sir Bobby in the flesh in 2005, when he was holding a signing for his autobiography "Farewell but not Goodbye" in Manchester's Trafford Centre, of all places.

I had two copies of the book, one for me, one for me brother, as well as a brand new Newcastle United shirt bought from Sports Soccer (oh!) over the way.

My son was in tow, and he had with him his own Ipswich Town top, and when it was presented to Sir Bobby for his signature, his eyes gave that familiar twinkle, "I haven't seen one of THESE in a long while!"

I was elated, speechless, full of awe and all thing inbetween that afternoon.

Bobby Robson was the manager of England when I old enough to pay attention to the World Cup and such, and when he came to Newcastle United, I was walking on air.

Seeing the television pictures this weekend, I was filled with mixed emotions of pride and cheer but also a tinge of sadness: such a great man, now so weakened with his 5 (five!) battles with cancer.

As I type now, jumping from website to website with skynews on roll in the background, I see the West Ham team holding a minute's silence before their pre-season match against Beijing today.

He was a great footballing man, and I found him to be a humble and funny man at that, and I wonder how he would take such a thing.

The flags at Wembley are at half-mast.

Live on, Sir Bobby, live on.

Pizza! Cowabunga!

I know, I know, but I'm a nerd at heart...

I got to do a piece on the perfect meal that is UK Pizzas on Squidoo.

And spent quite a lot (if not too much) of time browsing images of pizzas over on flickr.

As I mentioned before, in a previous blogspot, the flickr.com site is amazing for browsing.

And browsing for pictures of pizza? Mama Mia!

I felt like Homer J Simpson, all slack-jawed and drool.

Which is reason #6 for why I don't have a webcam.

At the moment, I am not spending as much or any more time on my little blogger posts as I am on my lenses.

Bed and Breakfast and Squidoo

The accommodation lenses on Squidoo continue apace, although I'm sure I'll run out of steam eventually.

The most challenging part of creating these lenses, as is with most blogposts or webpages that I have tinkered with, is finding suitable images for upload.

I have only recently be introduced to the joys of Flickr.

A fantastic layout and usability is top-notch: the one downside I have found so far is erm... the opportunities for timewasting in the name of research!

It is so straightforward to gather images based on specific text or tags, and then to lose yourself in a particular photo group or photographer's album...

"Open In New Tab" has never been so much fun!

Accommodation in the UK for business, short trips or Holidays is the theme for now. So I have started with self-catering. Or Self Catering, I'm still not sure.

Late night for me, last night, and forgot to check the news that Bleeding Cool had warned was going to break at one of Joe Quesada's Marvel Comics panels.

I'm a geek, what can I say?

I saw the original Nightmare On Elm Street wa-a-a-ay back when it was first released into the cinemas. When the people running small local fleapits didn't care how old you were, as long as you had your pocket money.

I saw the second in film in the franchise at an open-air screening in France or Italy, I seem to recall.

Bi33are.

Number three, and my friends and I were well into the habit of taking four-packs of beer into the pictures, sitting at the back, shouting & geerally playing along with the films we watched.

A long time ago, I know, 'cause we could still smoke there, too.

I think the fourth film was the last one I shelled out cinema tokens for, because (and I am shaking my head as I type this) it was no longer realistic enough.

Comic Books In Chester, UK

Comic Books in Chester: Either Brand New or Back-Issues

Whenever I arrive at a new town or city, one of the first things I must find is a local source of comic books and graphic novels. As a fan, a comic shop in Chester is an important find, whether it’s a weekly visit or monthly perusal that you are after.

Finding a store is not always an easy thing. In a number of locations are grand stores such as Forbidden Planet, which may be fine if you do not mind a short journey, as the nearest one to Chester is in Liverpool.

But what about a site on my doorstep?

I mean a proper, local neighbourhood comic-shop, run by a friendly face. Larger sites may offer countless numbers of comics, toys and games, graphic novels, even shirts and models, but sometimes the pride and passion can be missing, becoming more of a toy store with comics, or bookstore with a graphic novel section.

A WHSmith or Waterstones is fine to pop in for a quick purchase, but comics and collecting often requires keeping up to date weekly, Thursday or Saturday visits are often a must, and as a fan, waiting a month or two for bookshelves to have the latest must-have collection is just not good enough.

And floppies, the weekly comics that keep the wheels of the comic book business turning are less and less easily found anywhere other than in a dedicated comic shop.

As with many hobbies, part of the fun is having others to share your passions with, to discuss who’s better or best or what you think about the direction of a certain storyline, and comic stores run by fans are great little bolt-holes to browse, search through, or just chat.

So I began with an online rummage for my Chester comic book seller, and came across Silver Acre Comics, who have an excellent website with a great amount of products. They use a Chester PO Box, so that counts as local to me!

But you can’t hang around chat about heroes to the salesman over the Internet, and that was the point of my finding a Chester comic shop.

I want an independent bricks and mortar site, my own, personal, LCS. I want to build a pull list, stock up my longbox, find those little comic books that you find by searching and thumbing, not by pointing and clicking.

I want a Chester comic company. And I found one. The Chester Comic Company. Of course, and right in the city centre, too:

Chester Comic Company is a little local comic shop stocking DC, Marvel, Image and all the independents.

They also stock (the now pre-requisite!) action figures and collectables, t-shirts, models and games.

Right on the doorstep, I can take my shopping list down there and start adding to my collection straight away.

I’ll be keeping my eye on the Chester Comic Company website, and report back on any news I find!

Only an Introduction

Hi.

I have decided to use this Blogger platform to record something like a diary of my new job.

A note of the workaday, of my work, each day.

Of course, this will not excuse any interminable ramblings or observations that I may make anyways.

I started working from home a fortnight ago, working on content and suchlike for a number of websites, mainly directory-based.

My all-new sedentary position affords me to smoke too many cigarettes and drink just the right amount of coffee, as well as surf the internet in the name of -ahem- research.

Phew.

...and the introduction only took me 10 days to accomplish!
